Once you’ve agreed and appointment, our installation partners Smart Metering Services (SMS) will send an engineer to your home to have a smart meter installed.
The process is super easy - you just need to be home during the installation, and have the area around your current meter clear and easy to access so the engineer can work their magic. The whole thing will take about an hour per meter, and once you’re set up you’ll be good to go.
Our engineer will aim to complete the installation as quickly as possible, with no inconvenience to you.
It usually takes around 45 minutes - 1 hour for one meter or around 1 hour and 30 minutes for a dual install. But this can depend on:
- The age of your current meters
- The type of meters you have installed
- How they’re set up
- You have modern meters that are close together
- Your meters are easy to access
- It’s difficult to access your meters
- Your meters are old and harder to detach from the wall
Speed up your installation by clearing a path to your old meters, making them easier for our engineer to reach.
Yes, but only for a while. Once our engineer is set up and ready to start the installation, they’ll switch off your electricity and then your gas. This will only be for around 20 minutes for each meter.
Before our engineer arrives it’d be a good idea to switch off electrical appliances like your oven, television, cable and satellite TV box, so they don’t get an electrical surge.
You’ll have a range of time options for your smart meter installation, and we can find an appointment time that fits your schedule.
Please remember that this is a time slot, so our engineer could arrive at any time within your chosen slot and then take 90 minutes to complete the installation.
We’ll send you a confirmation email before your appointment, confirming its date and time. It’ll also detail everything you need to know about your upcoming smart meter installation.
And we’ll send you a handy reminder before your installation date, to remind you that someone (over the age of 18) should be present to let our engineer in.
All of our smart meters are certified to the strict security standards set out in our Supplier License and the Smart Energy Code (SEC), and are operated according to UK and EU safety regulations. Smart meters use secure mobile technology to send your reads to our systems, ensuring we have the most up-to-date information for accurate billing.

These are powered by a battery that sits within the meter. The battery is designed to last over ten years before a replacement is required and when it is, the gas meter will alert our systems. When this happens, we will contact you to arrange an appointment to replace the battery.
These are powered directly from your electricity supply. In case of power failures, your smart meter will save your information (including your IHD information), so that it can be restored when the power is restored.
We follow the Smart Metering Installation Code of Practice (SMICoP), which aims to inform and protect customers who are having a smart meter installed in their home.
We’re working closely with the government and Smart Energy GB to upgrade all of our customers to smart meters. We'll reach out to all of our customers by 2020 to install a smart meter and IHD at no extra cost.
We also follow the Smart Metering Installation Code of Practice (SMICOP), which means we give you all the right information and support throughout the smart meter installation process.
