Energy price changes and your meter readings

For most energy customers, the price of your energy is changing on Monday 1 January. You may be wondering if it’s a good idea to take an extra meter reading.

Some customers won’t have to send extra meter readings. So if you fall under either of these categories, there’s no need to do anything.

  • If you have a fixed tariff, your prices won’t change.
  • If you have a smart meter, we receive your readings automatically.
  • If you have a prepayment meter, you’ll be buying energy at the new prices when you next top up

But if you have a traditional meter and are on a flexible tariff, taking an extra meter reading the day before the change will make sure your bills are accurate.

How to share your readings

Once you’ve read your meter, there’s no rush to send us that day’s reading - you have up to 30 days from the end of the month to submit it.

You can do this in My Account or on the Shell Energy app.

There’s no need to call us to submit your meter readings. Our website and call centres could be busy around the time of the change, and this could cause delays.

Top tip: Take a photo of your meter readings for your records. This makes it clear when you took the reading, and is especially useful if you have an older meter that’s harder to read.

Upgrade to a smart meter

To save yourself the time and hassle of sending us meter readings in the future, you can always get a smart meter. We’ll install one for you at no extra charge.
